COURSE DESCRIPTION
SPN 101 Elementary Spanish I (4) An introduction to the Spanish language and Spanish-speaking cultures, with emphasis on  speaking the  language based on  real life situations . No prerequisites. No prior knowledge of Spanish is assumed. This course is conducted in Spanish.

SPN 102 Elementary Spanish II (4) Continuation of the study of the Spanish language and Spanish-speaking cultures, with emphasis on  speaking the  language, based on situations in everyday life. Prerequisite: SPN 101 or equivalent. This course is conducted in Spanish.

SPN 150 Elementary Spanish Crash (5). A four weeks course taught at an accelerated pace. Emphasis on the development of communicative skills, basic structures, and cultural competence. Covers the equivalent of SPN 101 and 102 in one course. Participation in Conversation Workshops is mandatory. Intended for students who have had significant exposure to beginning Spanish, but are not ready to begin intermediate Spanish. Prerequisites: At least two years of high school Spanish, or equivalent, or consent of advisor.

SPN 201 Intermediate Spanish I (3) Review of Spanish language fundamentals. Emphasis on conversation and composition through the development  of speaking, reading, listening and writing. Study of Latin American civilization and culture. Prerequisite: SPN 102 or equivalent, or consent of the department head. This course is conducted in Spanish.

SPN 202 Intermediate Spanish II (3) Continuation of SPN 201 Further development of the four skills, with an emphasis on reading, composition. Expansion of vocabulary and review of selected grammatical features supported by study of Latin American civilization and culture. Emphasis on writing  and speaking the language. Prerequisite: SPN 201 or equivalent. This course is conducted in Spanish.

SPN 310 Spanish for Spanish Speakers (3) Designed for students who come from a Spanish-speaking background. Develops literacy with emphasis on writing (spelling, punctuation, diacritical marks) and reading comprehension. Special attention will be focused on the problems particular to bilingual students. Prerequisite: SPN 202 or recommendation by personal interview. This course is conducted in Spanish

SPN 311 Commercial Spanish (3) Intensive oral and written practice in business communications in Spanish. Emphasis on vocabulary acquisition, terminology and forms of business correspondence and documents, and oral communication designed  to meet the needs of  business people. Close examination of cross-cultural patterns as reflected in the commercial field. Prerequisite: Intermediate high proficiency level. This course is conducted in Spanish.

SPN 321 Conversation and Composition I (3). Designed to develop speaking and writing, and the development of basic composition skills. Special attention to fluency in spontaneous situations and  developing skills for oral and written usage and the study of selected grammatical structures. Prerequisite: SPN 202 or equivalent. This course is conducted in Spanish.

SPN 322 Conversation and Composition II (3). Continued development of speaking and  writing skills and the development of composition. Special attention to fluency in spontaneous situations and to developing skills for oral and written usage  and the study of selected grammatical structures. Prerequisite: SPN 321 or equivalent. This course is conducted in Spanish.

SPN 351 Spanish American Civilization (3) A survey of the development of the Spanish American people, through their historical, political, sociological, cultural, artistic and scientific works, Prerequisite: Spanish 202 or equivalent. This course is conducted in Spanish.

SPN 352 Mexican Civilization and History (3) Explores the history, politics, social structures and traditions of Mexico as expressed through the centuries. Begins with the pre-Columbian civilizations and continues through the independence movement and  modern Mexico. Prerequisites: SPN 202 or equivalent. This course is conducted in Spanish.

SPN 410 Advanced Spanish for Spanish Speakers (3) Designed for Advanced Spanish Speakers who come from a Spanish-speaking background. And would like to sharpen their Spanish skills. Intensive analysis on the fine points of the language. Areas typically problematic for native speakers will be presented and explored through a variety of topics that include; art, music, history, culture, food, etc. Prerequisite: recommendation by examener after passing the oral exam. This course is taught in Spanish with emphasis on composition.

SPN 421 Advanced Conversation and Written Composition I (3) Advanced practice of oral communication skills and development of composition skills. Through group discussions, oral presentations, analysis of literary genres, and other communicative activities students will develop skills and strategies for effective oral and written communication in Spanish. Prerequisite: SPN 321, SPN 322 or equivalent. This course is conducted in Spanish.

SPN 422 Advanced Conversation and Written Composition II (3) Intensive practice of oral and written communication skills at the advanced level. Advanced practice of oral communication skills and development of composition skills. Through group discussions, oral presentations, analysis of literary genres, and other communicative activities students will develop skills and strategies for effective oral and written communication in Spanish. Prerequisite: SPN 421 or equivalent. This course is conducted in Spanish.

SPN 445 Survey of Spanish American Literature (3) A survey of Spanish-American literature from the Conquest to the present, with emphasis  on the historical, cultural, and political factors which influenced their literary manifestations. Prerequisite: SPN 321, SPN 322 or equivalent, or consent of instructor. This course is conducted in Spanish

SPN 446 The Spanish American Short Story. A study of the short story form in Spanish American literature, particularly from the nineteenth century to the present. Students will read and analyze short stories and discuss them in Spanish, in class. Prerequisite: SPN 321, SPN 322 or equivalent. This course is conducted in Spanish.

SPN 480 Spanish Phonetics and Phonology (3)  An advanced course that provides a description and analysis of the physiology and articulation of modern Spanish sounds, based on structural phonemic theory. And intensive pronunciation practice will  be provided, in order to improve pronunciation of the Spanish language. Prerequisite: SPN 321, SPN 322 or equivalent. This course is conducted in Spanish.

SPN 481 Acquisition of Spanish as a Second Language (3) An overview, description, analysis, and critiques of methods and approaches to second language teaching with emphasis on the acquisition of Spanish. Surveys traditional and innovative approaches in language teaching. Prerequisite: Consent of instructor.

Spanish for the Professions

SPN 505 Spanish for Educators (2 – 8) Designed to help educators communicate effectively in Spanish with students and parents who are not fluent in English. This course is built around practical classroom situations. Course examines cultural aspects that can affect student performance and achievement. Prerequisite: Consent of instructor.

SPN 506 Spanish for Lawyers (2 – 8) Designed to help students develop Spanish language skills, emphasizing on vocabulary commonly used in civil and criminal legal services practice. Participants will develop stronger attorney-client relations by strengthening speaking and listening skills, learning legal terminology in Spanish, and helping students understand the Latin American and Spanish legal systems, political framework and related cultural contexts. There will be an emphasis in practical aspects of language usage. Prerequisite: Consent of instructor.

SPN 507 Spanish for Health Care Personnel (2 – 8) Intensive oral and written Spanish practice through simulations involving real life situations in intercultural settings. Provides vocabulary, idiomatic expressions, and cultural information for the specific needs of the medical professions. Prerequisite: Consent of instructor.

SPA 508 Spanish for Public Safety (2 – 8) Intensive oral and written Spanish practice through simulations involving real life situations in intercultural settings. Provides vocabulary, idiomatic expressions, and cultural information for the specific needs of the law enforcement professional. Prerequisite: Prerequisite: Consent of instructor.

SPN 509 Spanish for Social Workers (2 – 8) Intensive oral and written Spanish practice through simulations involving real life situations in intercultural settings. Provides vocabulary, idiomatic expressions, and cultural information for the specific needs of  social workers professional. Prerequisite: Prerequisite: Consent of instructor.
